What do you do?

Wehkamp is the most surprising online department store in the Netherlands. The transition from post-order company to one of the largest e-commerce retailers has been a successful one, especially over the last 3 years Wehkamp has experienced an impressive turnaround. Customer sales of €729.5m are at record levels and represent the year-on-year growth of 22%. This growth has been driven by the successful implementation of a differentiated strategy, exclusive partnerships amongst others with influencer Miljuschka and substantial investment in technology, automation and infrastructure; such as the Wehkamp Tech Hub, innovative warehousing & a reliable distribution strategy. Next to this, Wehkamp is actively investing in professionalizing the finance function, both in terms of tooling as well as investing in talent, to create (real-time) actionable insights and become a true co-pilot for the business. That’s also where you will bring added value!

In this position you will be part of the Commercial Control team. You report to the senior Commercial Controller, who acts as the financial business partner for the Buying & Sales teams and both of you are supported by the junior Commercial Controller. As a team, you work closely together on improvement projects and support each other whenever necessary. You will act as the co-pilot for the Head of Marketing, Leads and marketing community divided in the 3 marketing areas: Digital & Analytics, Creative Hub and Marketing Communication (CRM). You support the strategic marketing plan by translating business decisions into financial impact, analyse marketing investment allocations, calculate ROI’s and assist in identifying profitable business opportunities for the marketing spend budget. You translate this into a solid, well founded budget & forecast and track, analyse and steer the performance. You manage the periodic reporting cycle, making sure you really understand the underlying causes of variances, trends in marketing spent, ROI and possible impact on business decisions, which you discuss with the business in the monthly performance reviews.

Business Partner

As a dedicated co-pilot for the marketing community, it is important to actively seek interaction with the business, really understanding what their key drivers are and where you can support them to boost performance. Giving insight in the performance of the promotional campaign for the collection of Miljuschka, analysing the SEA spent & conversion, comparing the ROI of different social media channels. Giving them insight and advise so they can decide how to allocate the marketing budget to get the best return.

Who are you?

You bring the analytical capacity and eagerness to really understand and grasp the key drivers and complexity of the business in order to add value. You know how to ask the right questions to get to the underlying drivers or arguments, understand the (chain) impact of variances and can drive & quickly adapt to change.

“Wehkamp has grown from a post-order company to one of the biggest e-com retailers of NL, operating in a fast paced, highly competitive market where innovation is key. Although we have been around the block, we still embody a “scale-up” attitude: entrepreneurial, pragmatic and energetic. This is the kind of company where you can make an impact from day 1, in any position, with the right attitude. It’s a unique chance for a self-starting, analytical financial to actively contribute and make an impact on the business. Therefore we need somebody who can listen, ask the question behind the question, looks at the business impact, can argument their findings in a constructive manner and grow into a trusted, valued sparring partner for their business stakeholders.”

  • Bachelor and/or Master degree in Economics, Finance or Accounting
  • 3-5 years of experience in (Business) Control or FP&A; preferably in a retail, e-commerce, FMCG (B2C) environment
  • (Strong) knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, dashboarding & BI applications
  • Ability to build relationships and communicate at all levels (fluent in English)
  • Analytical, eager to know what drives the figures and what the business impact is

With a continuous drive for innovation, Wehkamp has reinvented herself to become one of the leading E-commerce retailer in the Netherlands. With more than 2.7 million regular customers, more than 500,000 visitors per day and sending more than 10 million packages per year, they are a household name for almost every family in the Netherlands.

Over the year 20/21 (April), customer sales of €729.5m are at record levels and represent a year-on-year growth of 22%. This growth has been driven by the successful implementation of Wehkamp’s differentiated strategy, which aims to provide Dutch families with a curated range of inspirational and relevant products from leading global, local and Private Label brands across Fashion as well as the new focus categories of Home & Living, Beauty and Kidswear, which is at the heart of Wehkamp’s family proposition, and the accelerated shift to online shopping. Additionally, Wehkamp’s unique offering through its exclusive partnerships with HEMA and influencer Miljuschka continues to attract new and existing customers to the app and site.

The substantial investment in technology, automation and infrastructure in recent years, combined with deep relationships with brands and suppliers, ensured that Wehkamp was able to adapt quickly to the changing market conditions and meet unprecedented levels of demand, resulting from the accelerated shift online caused by the pandemic. The development and investment in the new focus categories proved timely and enabled the business to provide customers with the products and ranges they required. Home & Living (including Garden) experienced 40% year-on-year sales growth, with Beauty up 51% and Kids Fashion up 46%.

Future profitable growth

With Wehkamp’s business performance in terms of both strategic progress and financial results in 20/21 some 12 months ahead of plan, the management team is focused on the next stage of profitable growth. The key foundations are already in place, in terms of core retail competencies, a differentiated strategy focused on the categories of Fashion, Home & Living, Beauty and Kidswear and a proprietary and scalable technology, data science and logistics platform, all of which are underpinned by a profitable and cash generative business model.

As one of the leading and best known e-commerce operators in the Netherlands, Wehkamp is well positioned to benefit from the ongoing structural shift to online shopping, which across all of its product categories represents a sizeable opportunity. Additional planned range improvements, further growth in Private Label and ongoing upgrades to the customer experience will provide the business with opportunities to further grow the number of active customers and their frequency of purchase. The business will also look more widely at other potential opportunities for above market growth.
