What will you do?

As a fast-growing, international Edtech scale-up, it's Scribbr’s goal to become the world's leading academic writing brand. With 10m+ in revenue, a strong annual revenue growth, 65+ staff, lots of entrepreneurial energy and no shortage of plans for further growth, we're now looking for a Finance Director to complete the management team and strengthen the backbone of Scribbr’s next growth phase. As the new Finance Director, you will cover the full finance spectrum - from being a trusted strategic advisor to the management team to making sure all the company’s financial processes run like clockwork. You will make sure that the financial set-up is future-proof, you set up a structure & analytics which allows you to actively advice & steer the business and really act as financial business partner on all fronts.

You ensure Scribbr can deal with a continued fast growth and with the implementation of new strategies and/or business models, such as new services or products (business case, scenario analysis, pricing, inbedding in finance structure), new methods of online payment, (further) internationalisation or topics like optimizing the tax planning. You provide strategic advice on financing and M&A and take immediate action when needed. As part of and finance business partner to the management team, you propose and prepare KPI’s, margin analysis, investment decision support and other analyses to ensure optimal commercial decision making. You prepare (and track) budgets, forecasts and ad-hoc analyses to support Scrbbr with the next growth cycle.

Together with your team of 3 talented youngsters, who you actively mentor, you manage the periodic close, prepare/review the monthly and annual accounts, tax returns, execute cost control, ensure compliance and risk management, and manage and forecast cash flows. You will be the liaison for all external parties such as the tax authorities, legal and tax advisors, auditors and other stakeholders (e.g. 3rd parties / payment providers).

To do this it is important that you get to know, review and optimize all finance processes within Scribbr with the goal to create a strong, scalable and value-adding finance backbone. You review and improve the management information system, including an upgrade of the accounting system, the BI environment and the monthly reporting pack. You improve efficiency of finance processes by imbedding new functionalities into the CRM/ERP system (Houston). It is your view and business case on how you should structure finance, which activities should be done inhouse or by an external provider and which investments you have to do to get the finance foundation to the next level.

A day in the life of Scribbr's Finance Director

“Within Scribbr no day is the same, and neither will yours. Starting off the day discussing with the Victoria, Head of Customer Operations, why the plagiarism revenue is down for the past week, looking at conversion rates and deepdiving into the root cause. Next on your schedule is a meeting with an external party for a demo on their financial software, a reference of a former colleague who are using the tool right now. One of 3 parties that you will meet with to select a new tool that can accommodate scalable, automated processes and have good interfacing features with Houston and PowerBI.

After a nice lunch and a walk around the block, trying to avoid the tourist on the Bloemenmarkt, you run into Hilde, Head of Expert Operations. You build a customized dashboard for her combining the operational KPI’s (from Houston) with analytics on editor performance, trends & variances. She has some technical questions on the dashboard and wants to discuss Editor incentives with you. You’ve been piloting in busy season with an incentive program, but this might be valuable to setup together in a more structural way.

End of the day is the MT meeting, for which you finalize the analytics and business case (financial model) that you are going to discuss. The meeting is very constructive, the case is looking good and is a go. For you this means phase 2; how are you going to embed this new service within the structure? Which regulatory aspects do you have to start and which controls have to be embedded? Do the existing payment methods support it? How can you track the performance? Tomorrow’s another day. First, you enjoy some drinks together on the boat…"
