What do you do?

You might know Brunel from the Volvo Ocean Race which they used to sponsor or you might have heard or read about the Brunel Solar Team. This team of students from TU Delft designs and builds a solar-powered racing car to participate in solar races worldwide and to inspire people in the fields of sustainability and innovation. The Group Finance team works from the global HQ in Amsterdam, working closely alongside senior management and the board. It is a specialized, diverse team covering a broad range of finance topics on group level such as M&A, Business Control, Consolidation & Reporting, Accounting & Financial Control and Internal Audit. To strengthen the team we are looking for a Group Business Controller who can not only act as a true co-pilot for group management and the business but is also capable of further enhancing the business control function in the regions.

Within the Group Business Control team, everybody supports each other when necessary, rotates regions and responsibilities over time to develop more broadly and works on strategic projects together. The team is jointly responsible for the group planning & control cycle, the periodic statutory & board management reporting and the supervisory board reporting deck. Each Group Business Controller will be in the lead for input and commentary for their own regions and functional topic. In your case, this will be either Business Control or M&A, depending on your experience and interest. For your regions, you are the sparring partner for the Regional Managing Directors and Finance Directors who have P&L responsibility. You assess and challenge their financial, commercial and operational performance and support and steer leadership decisions with financial data and strong business analyses. You look at market developments, competition and future projects, initiate and drive actions to optimize results, impact growth in new and existing client portfolios and mitigate risks in strategy execution. You bring knowledge and expertise to the regions in the field of predictability of business goals, growth and risks, and in case of underperformance, you cooperate with the region to set up a strategic recovery plan.


A significant part of your position will be spent working on ad hoc analysis, business cases, improvement and strategic projects. For example, on-site support, which will require you to travel to one of the countries in your region to set up a recovery/turnaround plan together with the local management, or work on an M&A project with the Group Controller and CFO, or work on the implementation of a 1-pager in the reporting deck, providing the board with commentary on the key drivers, trends and risks they need to know and should act upon. Furthermore, we expect you to identify best practices and deliver proactive insights, roadmaps, and solutions to implement these company-wide.

You know how to ask the right questions to get to the underlying drivers or arguments, understand the (chain) impact of variances and can drive and quickly adapt to change.

  • Master's degree in Finance, (Business) Economics or Accountancy, preferably supplemented with a post-Master qualification
  • Min. 5+ years of experience as a (Group) Business Controller, in FP&A or in Transaction Services; experience with(in) an international and multicultural corporate is a must
  • You feel very comfortable with tools like Excel and PowerPoint. You have strong financial modeling skills and experience and/or interest in BI tooling
  • Excellent communication skills in English, Dutch would be a plus
  • A robust, open discussion partner at all levels and through all cultures
  • Strong interpersonal skills; you have the know-how to connect and inspire internal stakeholders
  • Strongly driven for results and have the ability to handle ambiguity and cross-functional team dynamics
  • Analytical, enterprising, decisive, pragmatic, assertive, clear and fair
