What do you do?

At Fish Tales they love seafood, everyone should be able to enjoy it indefinitely, but with the current state of the oceans that’s no easy feat. Now is the time to change course: if we want the seas to remain a healthy source of life, there have to be some fundamental changes to the world of seafood. Enter Fish tales – a fast-growing, sustainable scale-up that is here to change the fish supply chain for good. With lots of entrepreneurial energy and no shortage of plans for further growth, they are now looking for a Head of Finance who will strengthen the financial backbone for the next growth phase. As the Head of Finance, you will cover the full finance spectrum - from being a trusted strategic advisor to the management team, to making sure all the company’s financial processes run like clockwork.

For starters it is important that you get to know the business through and through, on top of that you review and optimize all (finance) processes with the goal to create a strong, scalable and value-adding finance backbone. Looking at the supply chain and the accompanying transactions, what different (fiscal) requirements there are or should be in the different countries that Fish Tales operates in or is expanding to. Or the further integration of Eazystock and AFAS, reviewing which processes can be automated and/or optimized. You have the full finance responsibility, including making sure the (statutory) accounting, fiscal and compliance aspect are dealt with. You actively mentor the financial accountant, who takes care of the day-to-day operational finance activities.

You are part of the Management Team, together with the General Manager, Marketing & Operations, where you work closely together to determine the key drivers for the business and advise on establishing, tracking and challenging KPI’s (financial, operational and commercial). You optimize the in-depth management reporting dashboards, which will provide true insights in business performance, opportunities and risks. Furthermore you will be involved in setting up the strategic multi-year plan by providing a solid financial argumentation, scenario analyses, investment and business cases. You will translate this into a periodic budget, cashflow and (rolling) forecast on country, product and partnership level. You take the lead in the periodic business reviews, where you can clearly explain the variances and your take on them to the various stakeholders. More importantly you discuss what this means for future business decisions. To do this, getting into the details is crucial, while always keeping sight on the bigger picture.

Good to know

You ensure Fish Tales can deal with a continuous fast growth by supporting strategic decision making on all fronts. And there are a lot of decisions to take when you are expanding so fast…..

What was the impact of the latest promo at Albert Heijn? How do you provide the insights in a dashboard? Should we consider new suppliers for the production facilities to be closer to our end-customer? Which retail partners matches with our branding and how can we set up the partnership (T&A / pricing)? What budget will we allocate to marketing and where do we spend it? How do we track the marketing ROI? Which countries are we going to expend to first? Which investments do we have to do for a new market entry? What is the market share / revenue projections? Which financial structures should we set up and which fiscal and legal obligations are there?

On the other hand giving insight in, advising on and optimisation of the warehousing and fulfilment chain will be a crucial focus area of the role. What kind of partnership do you have with the fishermen and packaging vendors? What stock levels should we have that we are both able to supply on short notice, but also limit waste? From the ocean to the local supermarket, there are a lot of business crucial decisions to make.

All these kind of decisions have to be supported by strong financial models, market research, scenario analysis and investment cases. You will really deep dive into all different kind of business & finance topics, find out what you don’t know yet, align who you need and use your social & analytical capacity to connect the dots.

Who are you?

You have the intellectual & strategic curiosity to really understand and level with the business, with the capacity to think out of the box. You see the big picture, through different cross sections, reach sound conclusions and can get the point across. But you also really don’t mind getting your hands dirty and tackling many things you haven’t encountered before.

“We need somebody who matches our entrepreneurial start-up culture, where everything you do matters and everybody has the same hunger to make a real difference. You will be joining a team of extremely passionate colleagues who truly believe in Fish Tales and who are doing everything to get the message out to the world. We believe in talent and potential.
